Most commonly firefighters work in 24-hour shifts, reporting to work at 0700 and work until 0700 the next day. Firefighters usually work a total of 56 hours per week†, On the average, firefighters work ten 24-hour shifts each month, leaving them with 20 days off each month. Firefighters are able to trade shifts with other firefighters. (Battalion Chief Paul Lepore) The article â€Å"A day in the life as a firefighter† tells the reader the life of a firefighter in a day’s work. It tells the challenges, different aspects of the job, and also the work schedule. Firefighters have multiple assignments throughout the day. First thing in the morning the crew checks out the fire engines, all their equipment is ready to go. Then they have their briefings from the previous shift. This contains what happened on their shift and gives the oncoming shift a heads up on what they should double check and make sure it was restocked and put back. Once they complete the briefings Firefighters go out and wash the fire engines, this is a huge part in representing the department with equipment that looks good. Once cleaning and checks are complete Firefighters go out and do different assignments like Inspections in different businesses, fire hydrant checks, and also go to the store and get food for lunch and dinner. Once they are back from the store and doing the assignments they have to do training assignments online, they have weekly classes due every week that they must complete, and they also have time for exercising, and training. Dinner is at 6:00PM, Most people think Firefighters eat their food for free but they don’t, they pay their own money and everyone on the crew splits the food bill. Everyone takes turns cooking food on different shifts. After dinner is done, everyone has certain chores to complete like doing the dishes, taking out all the trash, vacuuming, and mopping. After dinner is the Firefighter’s personal time where they can relax, watch TV, study, and have free time. Sleeping conditions vary in different departments. In some departments, the the crew sleeps in the same room, and some departments they have their own rooms. Wake up time is 6:00AM. Rookie Firefighters will get made fun of, scolded if they aren’t up early and ready to go. Some challenges of being a Firefighter â€Å"consist o f challenging training, it is ongoing because there is always new technologies (such as hybrid cars) that we need to know about, so keeping on top of it all can be demanding. Some of the situations that you deal with can be confronting and stressful, and the people in those situations might not be thinking clearly, so that be difficult as well.† (A day in the life as a firefighter). In the United States, â€Å"Over 50% of the deaths of on-duty firefighters are classified as sudden cardiac deaths. A holistic view of the multiple risk factors and their relation to the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. Consumption of whole grains and alcohol were associated with a reduction of the risk of heart disease, while higher Body Mass Index (BMI) scores and increasing age were associated with increased risk of heart disease.† (Lifestyle and safety practices of firefighters and their relation to cardiovascular risk factors) It is not healthy waking up to a loud alarm, bright lights at times like 2:00AM and be able to get ready in about a minute and be geared up and on the fire engine. This puts a huge stress on a firefighters body and mentally wears them out as well. Some of the stuff Firefighters see is unseeable. Firefighters see people in their worst times, from infants to the elderly, blood, bones you name it. This is really hard to take and just forget about it, some Firefighters consume alcohol to get their mind off of it, make themselves feel better. Departments provide help for these people, rehab, and they have a debriefing after a serious call so they can all talk about it and get their feelings out. Holding this information in can be a bad thing. Research has also shown that Firefighters turnout gear holds all the ash and soot on itself, and effects firefighters health with symptoms like asthma, lung issues. BMI issues are common, there are firefighters that are overweight due to lack of exercise, and poor diet, this also causes problems like high cholesterol, blood pressure. The risks of being a Firefighter consists of Physical dangers, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Unstable Work-Life Balance. Much like soldiers engaged in war zone conflicts, firefighters are susceptible to developing PTSD, This can lead to poor sleep habits, flashbacks, depression, and anxiety. Long work hours may create conflicts with family due to not being home for long periods at a time, this creates stress, and ca n also affect the quality of work provided. From my experience as a Reserve Firefighter, I have spent lots of hours at the fire station getting an idea of what it’s really like, I started working the full 24 hour shifts, and doing the same assignments as everyone else. By the time I am all geared up my heart is racing, adrenaline pumping. There are also calls where there is some gnarly stuff that the normal person might not ever see, some stuff that you can never unsee. After every call we talk about what happened and talk to each other so we aren’t holding it all in and thinking about it, making yourself depressed. The overall atmosphere of being at the fire station is really cool, we get our work done and keep ourselves busy throu ghout the day. I can see myself being there one day. College Student Essay As a student nurse, I was working in a student assignment group, where we were to make a project for a presentation on â€Å"Breast Cancer†. We had four persons in our group. On our meeting day, one of our group members did not come to our group meeting and she also did phone none of us. We were not able to finish our group work because we were missing her part of the project. We did not even know whether she had started her part of the work or not. Our meeting without her part of the work was not productive and we decided to set up another meeting on another day. On next day I met her and asked if everything is fine with her and her family. She confirmed that everything was fine. My expectation was that she would give some explanations or would try to talk about what had happened. She did not show any interest in a further communication. Her behavior was surprising and the same time frustrating for me. I perceived that she was not a responsible person, because before our meeting she did not call us. I also perceived that she did not value and respect other people time. I felt that she even ignored the importance of the group project and the work that she was spouse to complete. The conflict arose in our work group about her part of the work, and we were undecided whether we were to keep on being silent or to start an open discussion about our concerns. Eventually, we did not do very well on our group project and then our group was disbanded when for the next project we had to choose new partners for the group. 2. Communication Despite my perceptions about her, I decided to ask her if everything was fine with her family. She confirmed that her family was fine and then I kept a distance from her because I decided that she did not have a legitimate reason not come to the meeting and in fact this validated my perception that she was not responsible person and she did not value other people time. Because of her behavior the conflict arose in our work group about her part of the work, and we were undecided whether we were to keep on being silent or to start an open discussion about our concerns. Eventually, we did not do very well on our group project and then our group was disbanded when for the next project we had to choose new partners for the group. Even when our group project was completed, I kept thinking about her behavior and I came to the conclusion that there could have been other reasons for her behavior that she never shared with any of us. I feel that the reason for the further events was the lack of communication between her and the group members. Now I regret that I failed the opportunity to fix the situation by an open communication, and create strong group solidarity. But I value this experience for the idea of importance of a communication to build strong group solidarity. 3. Possibilities I formed my perceptions about her having only limited information about her; I did not know the real reason she had that day not to come to the meeting. As I knew that she had a large family with four children, and maybe one of her children was sick, so she had to stay at home with the sick child. As a mother, her baby’s health could be the priority for her. The other reason for her not to come to the meeting could have been an accident and maybe she did not have an opportunity to call us or to let us know about it. Finally, maybe one her close relatives had breast cancer and she was very sensitive to the work project, so she was not able to come and discus the topic with the group members. We never had an opportunity to know what exactly had happened to her since she never talked to us about the reasons for her behavior. 4. Influences Analyzing the event I can identify many assumptions on my part that influences my thoughts. There is another important factor about myself, which formed my perceptions. I have an experience in working with sick children and their parents and in this case I thought that the reason could be that her baby was sick, and as a mother for her the baby’s health is the most important thing for her. I am a very responsible person, and I respect people and their time. I am always early for any meeting or group projects. I am also very careful with my study process, so this made me feel that she did not respect our group member’s time. In my cultural background it is very important if I promise or decide to do something in a group, and I am not able to go on with that, I must let my partners know. Another thing that made an influence on my perception was that I value other people time and I always let them know if I am late. The other reason could be that as an ESL student she had a hard time to complete the work. As an ESL student with some language barriers, I thought that she had a hard time to complete any work. 5. Application of Learning to Nursing Practice I think that perception checking can play a significant role in my critical thinking and decision making process. Only open communication and accurate perception checking can help us to understand other people behavior. It is now my understanding is that I would have done better to discuss the issue with my group partner, and to address the conflict in an open way. Open communication would give me an opportunity to perform and improve my direct perception checking skills. Even somehow I had tried to discover the real reasons for my group partner behavior, my actions and skills were not enough to understand her behavior, to have a whole picture of what happen, rather that make my assumptions. On my meeting with her on the next day somehow I tried to understand the possible reasons for her behavior. That was an example of indirect perception checking process, but not performed completely. I feel that I formed most part of my perceptions on my own assumptions. For my further successful practice I have to learn more about perception checking process and also improve my perception checking skills toward my successful nursing career. Nursing work is always a team work and in my further practice I also will use this experience to build team solidarity.

Standing shoulder to shoulder with practically no room to breathe, the slaves were hardly thinking about the new diseases they were about to encounter let alone the musical instruments left at home. The only discussions aboard the ship were most likely limited to shouts of defiance or lamentations to gods or ancestors. Once arrived, the Africans strived to rebuild the culture, music, and religion that had been stripped from their lives. Making instruments such as drums and fifes, there was a feeling that the drumming and dancing would institute a feeling of pride and hope in what seemed to be hopele ss times. Music became a form of revolt from the hardship and plantation owners did not want to be bothered with the thought of rebellion and therefore banned the drum as well as allowing slaves to meet others from another plantation. Music wasn’t the only revolt; healing practices that coincided with religious practices were also a part of this revolution. This revolution was to retain their African heritage without fully conforming to their white masters’ ideals. Funerals eventually became the only time at which slaves could meet, which was frequent due to the harsh environment. These funerals were rituals, which involved music, especially drumming. However, funerals weren’t the only musical outlets allowed, other folk religious ceremonies were also practiced. The Myal cult was the first of these folk religions shortly followed by Kumina, Pukumina, Convince, and Zion Revivalist. Each of these folk religions plays a role in the belief systems of Jamaicans and has also played a role in the evolution of early reggae music. Rather than focusing on the religions separately and wholly, I focus on one common characteristic that still exists today in Jamaica as well as all over the West Indies and even in various spots in the southern United States- healing practices and the practitioners.

Before the arguments as to whether the policy is effective or not however, it may well be first necessary to look at and understand the policy.The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Plan and Choice Plan, otherwise known as Medicare D Drug plan was aimed to supplement or enhance the original Medicare program. The Medicare D drug plan was passed into what is known as the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act or MMA legislation. It was enacted by the Bush administration in 20 03. Benefits from the program started only recently, in January 2006. (â€Å"Medicare Part D†, 2006)Medicare D drug benefit plan is a voluntary outpatient prescription drug benefit for people under the Medicare program—beneficiaries include the elderly (over 65 years of age) and diseased beneficiaries (end stage renal disease patients, for example) (â€Å"Medicare (United States)†, 2006).Simply stated, the Medicare D Drug plan is a type of insurance to seniors and other disabled citizens who may not be able to anticipate or pay for the high cost of medicine. The Medicare program works with many private insurance and other companies to bring these seniors a variety of plans. Part A of the program covers hospital care for inpatients, skilled nursing services, health care for patients at home, as well as other health services. In addition to that objective, a need existed to revolutionize the original Medicare program and this was due to â€Å"gaps† in the original Medicare plan coverage (â€Å"Choosing a Medigap Policy to Supplement the Original Medicare Plan â€Å", 2006).Changes in the original Medicare policy involved a means testing. This means that a higher income (and this includes Social Security benefits) would consequently mean a higher pay for Medicare beneficiaries. To illustrate the point: Medicare beneficiaries would see their premiums increase dramatically before they die, i.e. they retire at an age of 65, live until 95, but have an inflation of 3%; without working out the numbers this already clearly shows that beneficiaries aren’t getting benefits.The next generation of Medicare beneficiaries is said to have to pay the full price of their Medicare benefit from the beginning of their retirement, despite of paying Medicare taxes their entire life.
